The 2014 BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat roadster with a power-retractable hardtop that comes in three trims.
The Z4 sDrive28i has a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, while the sDrive35i and the sDrive35is models have more powerful turbocharged, 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engines.
The Z4 sDrive28i comes standard with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic. A seven-speed automated manual is optional on higher trims. The Z4 hasn’t changed much since it was last fully redesigned for the 2009 model year, so this overview uses applicable research and reviews from the 2009 through 2014 model years.
The base 2014 BMW Z4 sDrive28i has a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It comes standard with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic.
The 2014 BMW sDrive28i with a manual transmission gets an EPA-estimated 22/34 mpg city/highway, which is on par with the fuel economy of rivals like the Mercedes-Benz SLK250. The Z4 sDrive35i has a turbocharged, 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque.
It comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission and a seven-speed automated manual is optional. The top-of-the-line sDrive35is has a turbocharged, 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine that produces 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It comes standard with a seven-speed automated manual transmission.
BMW says the sDrive35is can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph.
Though critics love the powerful six-cylinder engines in the Z4 sDrive35i and sDrive35is, they think the base four-cylinder in the sDrive28i has more than enough power for most driving situations. They also like that the Z4 sDrive28i gets better gas mileage than the sDrive35i and sDrive35is. Reviewers say that the six-speed manual transmission is precise, and they write that the eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly.
2014 BMW Z4 corners quickly, with plenty of grip and almost no lean. However, it still can’t match the handling prowess or steering feel of class leaders like the Porsche Boxster. An Adaptive M Suspension system is optional on the sDrive28i and sDrive35i, and standard on the sDrive35is. With the Adaptive M Suspension, you can choose between Comfort, Sport and Sport+ suspension settings. Test drivers say the Z4 has a comfortable ride that makes it a welcome companion on long-distance trips.
The 2014 BMW Z4 comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB port and HD Radio. Available features include front and rear parking sensors, navigation, Bluetooth audio streaming, satellite radio and a premium audio system.
